Walking with the Dinosaurs-UPDATE!

Posted by Michelle On April - 29 - 2009

wwd1I am sure you’ve seen the commercials on TV in recent weeks advertising the spectacular Walking with the Dinosaurs show that is currently playing at Key Arena!  This shows comes around every so often and always gets amazing reviews!  If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet and need something to convince you to go and check it out this time around here’s the little push you might need.

How about a COUPON CODE available to SMB readers to entice you!?

OK, ok, stop begging…here you go!

Has anyone seen this show in years past?  If so, give us the nitty gritty!

UPDATE:  We went and saw the dino show this weekend!  IT WAS AMAZING!  I highly recommend going if it comes back to town and you get the chance.  There wasn’t a bad seat in the house.  We weren’t in the lowest section, but we were one section up.  The way the stage was set up, I doubt there was a bad seat in the house- even the cheap seats were probably better than decent!  The show itself was very informative (even for a 4-year old).  The narrator explained everything very clearly and my son was completely enthralled from the get go.  I had warned him that the dinosaurs were simply robots- not real.  He seemed to get it and he was fine with them (even though they were HUGE!).  He was fine with it, until the T-Rex roared that is!  Thankfully that was at the end of the show.  Even though the T-Rex’s continuous roaring made him cry a little, he was very excited about the show as a whole and couldn’t stop talking about this dino and that dino and all of the lights, and people, etc.  Definitely give the show a great review!  GO SEE IT!

Walk For Maddie

Posted by Seattle Mom Blogs On April - 13 - 2009

The Internet has been shaken by the death of a lovely and amazing little girl, Maddie Spohr. The thing about blogging is that you can know, and love, people you may never have met in person. I was lucky enough to meet Heather in person in room 704 at Blissdom where we found a quick affinity for whiskey together. “I like her!” I said as I turned to “Vdog.” She laughed. “I know, right?”

The rest is history.

maddieWhen someone you only briefly met, but read, has a tragedy, it hits so close to home it’s as real as any life experience. To know someone is suffering the worst kind of suffer, the loss of a child, makes you forgot your relationship is based on ASCII characters and code. Instead, it becomes very obvious how strong this online community really is and the love that can poor from the people sitting at their computers is as real as an actual hug, tears and all.

On April 6th, Heather and Mike rushed their daughter, 17 month old Maddie, to the hospital. We read as Maddie fell ill on Saturday and left comments for Heather, Mike, and Maddie to get well! We’re here! The internet loves you!

We watched and waited.

When the tweet (and blog post) came that she had passed away, April 7th, there was shock, denial, tears and finally: action. The Internet pulled together an d raised over $25,000 in honor of Maddie for March of Dimes. Blogs started turning purple in honor of Maddie. Teams are being formed in her honor.

Seattle, we have a team to walk in the March of Dimes for Maddie Spohr and all the preemies who need extra special care.

Please consider walking with us. If you’re unable to walk, then maybe give a few dollars to the March Of Dimes. I don’t ask for donations in my own life but for the lives of those preemies and those who lost babies and children, I can certainly beg.

We, at Room 704 and the Mamaspod girls are making purple bracelets and earings as donations for purchase. All profits go to the Spohr family to help with memorial service and burial costs. If you’d like to join with us on the walk, please consider purchasing a purple earing or bracelet. We’ll be wearing purple in honor of Maddie (and if there’s interest, I may have some t-shirts made up) so let me know ahead of time.

Join our team in person or in spirit. I know she is an LA girl, but she’s effected us up here in Seattle as we, moms and daughters and friends, can feel the weight of such a loss. I’m walking for Maddie and for my own preemie son, Owen, who is one gigantic two year old now and I will never ever take his life for granted.

Greening up Seattle, One Raindrop at a Time

Posted by Carrie On April - 4 - 2009

march-09-1-0383As I sit, laundry spinning away, at weeks end of what has been the soggiest “Spring Break” on record, I can’t help but find the irony in the blue skies that have suddenly decided to show themselves. Oh yes, there they are on this next to last day of “raincation,” mocking us with their high clouds and warmth (yes, actual warmth) generated by the sun.

You all know what I’m talking about.

Yes, we live in the land of rain. I’ve lived here for nearly all of my 35 years, it should be no surprise. Yet I think we can all agree that there was something special about these past few weeks in regards to the weather. We saw snow, we saw rain, we saw hail and I swear to you on my granny’s underpants that I saw a mini twister in my neighborhood the other day. Yes, it’s been a wacky and wild spring so far. Which makes me wonder, “What else does Mother Nature have in store for us before summer finally makes an appearance?”

I’m almost afraid to ask.

A few days ago I changed my Facebook status to read: Carrie is trying to find the good in all this rain.

I know, I know – posting about the weather is just about the lamest thing one can do, but I had reached the end of my rope. I could not log onto Facebook and not see a sentence from a fellow Pacific Northwesterner that did not have something to do with the weather. So I caved. But in doing so, some wise people left me with tidbits that not only made me smile, but made me grateful for these all to frequent soggy days that grace our region, because without them we would not have the following:

Lush green grass
Beautiful flowers (Hello! Tulips are right around the corner!)
Evergreen trees
and
Excuses not to do yardwork when it’s raining cats and dogs

You see? There is a silver lining to every single raindrop that falls from our skies.

What do you love about the rain? (And no, this isn’t a joke)

Carrie can be found pulling her hair out on her personal blog Stop Screaming I’m Driving!  She takes offers of free babysitting and lattes very seriously.  You can reach her at carrieb[at]seattlemomblogs.com or editor[at]seattlemomblogs.com.

WOOT!

Posted by laurayo On April - 3 - 2009

wootI love finding hot deals and I love saving a dime.  I always have, but now it seems like it is the cool and trendy thing.  Well that’s what I tell myself.

I no longer feel embarrassed when I whip out my envelope full of coupons to save a dime.  In fact people now look in awe and want to be me.  They want to know how I just saved a whopping $3.00.  Okay.  Maybe not, but it does seem that everyone is using coupons and it’s not just me anymore.

Thanks to a Facebook friend I just discovered a new website with daily savings.  Woot!  No really it is called Woot.  This site features a Daily WootShirt Woot and a Wine Woot.

Check it out and if you were looking for a new Dyson Vacuum.  Well today is your lucky day!

Leslie, Laura and I headed out on the town- which this time (for us Northenders) meant heading  just down the road to Lake Forest Park and Third Place Commons to listen to Dooce talk about her .  We got there…well, a little early. There are people that actually like the front row.  However, we weren’t early enough, because some of our own SMB columnists were a little more punctual and nabbed the prime front row.

The rumors you’ve heard are true…she’s…..tall.  Tall in a, “I wish I was that height” kind of way, not the freakishly, stop and stare type.  She looked great and kept us entertained.  She read 2 excerpts from her book (from her iPhone no less) and we cringed for her, we laughed with her, and we got the .  Laura has a problem, and we love her because in spite of it.  All in all, it was a fun evening and we got home after the kids were in bed- so it’s a win-win!

Did you go and we just missed you somehow?  If so, what did you think?

Candyware

These are tough times for so many…we know…we get it. It sucks. So let’s start a revolution here at SMB…. bringing back the ‘Help Thy Neighbor’ philosophy- instead of buying into the ‘Every Wo(man) for Herself’ policy.

Exhibit A: Here’s a neighbor of ours (from beautiful Vancouver B.C.) – Janet from Candyware. Here’s her story and request:

————————————–

“Good afternoon SeattleMomBlogs-

I’ve finally had to admit the economy is affecting my business (www.candyware.com) and after hitting the emotional wall, it’s now time to get on with finding success through positive change and good old fashioned perseverance.

sweetandsimplegiving.com has been created to help find this success.

I HAVE SET A GOAL to sell 10,000 ‘sweet & simple’ necklaces before the end of 2009 and I NEED YOUR HELP to do it.

The necklaces are $15 apiece and five dollars of each purchase will be donated to global charity.

‘Sweet & Simple’’ style necklaces have been a favorite with Candyware customers since they were first introduced two years ago and are popular with women and girls of all ages. They are unique, fun, affordable and can make anyone’s day a little sweeter!

You can see my story at the ‘my story’ link on the sweetandsimplegiving.com website. Be sure also, to check Blog Archives for frequent updates.

I need to reach just 10,000 people to get to my goal and I look forward to doing so through print, online and in person.

So there you have it, a beautiful addition to your jewelry collection while helping out a business woman and making a charital donation in the process!

**We are not recieving anything from Candyware- I just thought it was a great reason to help a neighbor out! Plus, these colors remind me of SPRING! And we ALL know we could use a little Spring around here these days! **
