An Evening Worth Envying … A Night With Michael Buble

Whenever my sister and her husband are in town there is always an adventure waiting to happen. This time around they outdid themselves. They recently treated us poor college students to a night we will most likely always remember. The evening started with a dinner at the exquisite Palomino restaurant - thanks Lucy for the recommendation. The food here was simply divine and since I was sick with a head cold, this is saying a lot. Even my Coke tasted better than it usually does.We began the meal with the perfect blend of sweet and salty - a Brick Oven Fried Cheese Fondue plate. Is your mouth watering yet? It came with cambozola, taleggio, pistachio crust, perfectly seasoned thin pizza crisps, pear honey, fresh apple and pear slices. The four of us easily finished the plate off. I then had a Greek Salad complete with feta cheese, although we all joked that it should be renamed the Greekless Salad since I ordered it without the signature olives.

For my main course I enjoyed an outstanding pasta dish - Linguine with Rotisserie Chicken. I definitely need to find a recipe for this. Besides the tender chicken and perfectly al dente noodles, this dish contained sundried tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, fresh basil, garlic, crushed red peppers and balsamic vinegar.

Of course I left room for dessert and I wasn’t disappointed with my first experience of Vanilla Creme Brulee. Every bite was pure heaven.

After this delightful meal which we ate overlooking the downtown skyline, we rushed off to find our way to the Michael Buble concert. We ended up being a few minutes late to our seats (finding the concert hall was a tad bit more difficult than we anticipated), but we were still fortunate enough to catch the opening act performed by Jann Arden. Some of you 30-something old schoolers like myself might remember her being popular in the early nineties when her hit song, Insensitive, came out. Her voice was brilliant and we all found ourselves thoroughly enjoying her music. Good Mother was easily my favorite song she sang. It is one of those beautiful and heartfelt pieces that just makes you forget everything else as you sit there and soak it all in.

And then there was Michael Buble. I don’t think there are any words I can use to do the concert justice. In fact I don’t think I have ever been has highly entertained as I was by him … minus the few risque comments he slipped in here and there. Not only was his sultry crooning voice immensely captivating, but you also felt like you were in the living room of your best friend’s house while he performed. He made the concert hall feel intimate and you felt like he was talking and singing directly to you.

He was funny, he was charming and the energy he brought to the theater was infectious. He pulled you in and for the entire evening he had you grooving to and feeling the music. Only he could perform and get the crowd wild about “Y.M.C.A.” and of course when he sang Elvis, the applause was thunderous. He even had the mosh pit filled with women who were dying to get him to touch their outstretched hand.

Attending this concert made me realize how much I miss going to events. I love the thrill you get as you sit in the audience and are captivated by what is on stage. Musicals, plays, Broadway, concerts - I can’t get enough of them. It has been a long time since Rudy and I have been able to experience a little bit of culture, but hopefully we will get the chance to attend another event sooner rather than later.

  1. I got to see the concert last summer in Spokane… what a wonderful evening! And I agree… Jann Arden was a stellar opening act. Glad you had a chance to get out for a little culture. Too bad its too expensive to do on a regular basis, isn’t it?

  5. *sigh* How I’d love to go to a Michael Buble concert… or any concert at this point. I’m 23 and I’ve never been to one. :0/ I feel so deprived, haha!
